Standing Room Only

I’ve had enough time now to evaluate my new office desk that I purchased with an electrical lift so I could either sit or stand during my work day. From this I’ve learned a few things that I can apply to my conversations with prospective customers who are considering something similar for their control rooms or dispatch operations. I have recommended power assisted lifts for control room furniture in most 7/24 environments and have actually seen a large up-tick in purchases during recent years, even in control rooms where operators aren’t tethered to their control room console like 911 dispatchers. However, knowing the advantages of adjustable work surfaces and experiencing them first-hand is something entirely different.

To start, my experience has validated what I’ve been saying to control room managers and operators for years. But now I can take the conversation to another level by saying that anyone who sits for long periods of time should consider investing in an adjustable work surface because it helps the posture, increases energy level, improves circulation, and gives the legs a well-deserved break from a stationary position. What I didn’t expect is that I would prefer standing over sitting. Yes, standing is now what I like; hence I rarely sit during the day. In fact I have to remind myself to take some time to sit and rest my legs. I didn’t realize how many times that I stood-and-sat, and stood-and-sat every day. But now, it’s much easier to move around the room and I’m more comfortable when typing and speaking on the phone. I suggest that you give it a try and if you want a recommendation for a desktop lift, let me know.
